Kubra Akar, from Eskisehir, Turkey, begged mum Belma Akar to take her and her ten-year-old brother Muhammad to cool off by the Porsuk River.

Belma, 41, recalls that she agreed reluctantly and that shortly after arriving, she heard her son calling for help and rushed to the river bank to pull him out of the water, but there was no sign of his sister.

Belma said: “Kubra wanted to go there very much, it is a place she always comes to with her friends.

“We went that day at Kubra’s insistence even though we didn’t feel like it.

She added: “I heard Muhammad shouting: ‘Mum!’ I turned my head and saw that he was in the water, struggling.

“I went to the water’s edge. I took him out. But I couldn’t see Kubra.”

Divers took one hour to find and retrieve Kubra’s body from the river on 8th September.

Her brother was rushed to hospital but released after treatment, reports local media.

His mum revealed: “When I asked Muhammed how it happened two or three days later, he told me that he had been joking with his sister before they both fell into the water.”

She added: “I saved Muhammed but I couldn’t save Kubra.”

Belma told local media she had made a doll from her daughter’s clothes which she hugged as she mourned her death.
