This is the amazing moment a bridge over a flooded river disappears down a giant hole in front of stunned motorists.

Phone footage shows huge chunks of tarmac being swept away in front of drivers who had stopped just in time at the entrance to Turkey’s Daricabasi Tunnel.

Astonishingly, none of the group moved backwards even as the ground disappears right in front of their feet.

One of them can be seen posing for a selfie just a few feet from the crumbling edge of the abyss.

The clips – which emerged on social media on 11th July – were recorded at Mesudiy where under-road culverts were overwhelmed by the flooded Caglayan River.

Another video shows thousands of gallons of floodwater gushing under the road.

Ordu Province in the Black Sea region experienced several days of intense rainfall.

Isa Turkcan – the mayor of the nearby town of Ulubey – said: “Currently there is no traffic at all.

“Hopefully, if the weather clears, the highways teams and the Ministry of Transport will improve the situation and reestablish transportation.”

Netizens emphasised the force of nature.

One – ‘Sencer’ – said: “Nature always strikes back.”

‘Euphrates Turk’ claimed: “Nature does not forgive the weak. This was a weak bridge.”

But some believe poor construction standards and corruption caused the collapse.

‘Mehmet’ just said: “Incompetence of the contractor.”

And ‘Seyyah Saruhanli’ claimed: “There are always lousy structures and there is no control.”

‘Bulent Duman’ concluded: “From now on, let’s be more respectful to nature. Man is not stronger than nature.”
