The birds dropped the digits feet away from security guard Hayrettin Dogan at the filling station in Eyup district, Istanbul, local media reported on 22nd June.

After Hayrettin called the police, officers arrived on the scene and cordoned off the area.

After examining the body parts, they determined they were of human origin, and a murder investigation was swiftly launched.

According to a witness, the crows had apparently found the digits and tried to eat them.

However, they had then simply dropped them on the ground after discovering they were too tough a meal.

Local media reported that the digits – a big toe and a little finger – were sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute for DNA analysis.

It is not currently clear if they belong to one or two individuals.

The police are now investigating possible links between the body parts and people who have recently been reported missing.

They are also studying CCTV footage in a bid to track the crows’ journey and identify the possible killer or killers.
