A female karate champ aged 17 died while taking a shower at home when the building was struck by lightning.

The tragic incident unfolded when the athlete, Wissam Issaghd, 17, suffered a fatal electric shock while taking a shower at home in Baba Hassan, Algiers in Algeria on Monday, 5th June.

Rising star Wissam was a karate champion from the “Youth Sports Club – Baba Ahsan” in Algiers, and was a highly regarded figure in Algerian karate circles. 

Yassin Qouri, the head of the “Algerian Karate Federation, in a heartfelt post on social media, expressed deep condolences to the grieving family of the young karate champ. 

The social media post stated that Wissam was also in the midst of preparing for her baccalaureate exams in the scientific section at the renowned “High School of Martyr Ammar Sawas – Baba Hassan”.

The incident sent waves of sorrow throughout the Baba Hassan neighbourhood, where Wissam lived with her family. Her neighbours recounted the tragic event, stating that the young athlete was struck by an electric current while taking a shower.

Despite immediate efforts to save her life, Wissam was rushed to a nearby hospital, where attempts to revive her proved futile.

The Algerian karate family and sports enthusiasts across the nation are left mourning the loss of a rising star whose future held great promise.

It is unclear if the police initiated an investigation following the incident.
