This is the terrifying moment a section from a supersonic F4 Terminator Phantom II fighter breaks off and smashes to earth just a few feet from an office block.

Chilling video footage shows the 20-foot-long object spinning through the air almost in slow motion as it thunders to the ground over the Turkish capital Ankara.

Moments later it smashes into a car park at massive speed flattening three cars parked side by side on 4th September at about 11am.

Another clip shows the vehicles crushed completely by the impact of the object, understood to be an auxiliary fuel tank that fell from the Turkish Air Force jet.

Local media reported that the drop tank broke away from the Mach 2.2 fighter-bomber accidentally.

Firefighters were deployed to the scene along with military officials to assess the situation. No injuries have been reported.

Many locals watched in horror and filmed the moment the fuel tank fell from the sky.

The Turkish Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed to local media that the aircraft involved had landed safely at a military base in nearby Eskisehir Province.

The exact cause of the incident is currently being investigated.

The Turkish MoD said in a statement: “A detailed technical investigation into the matter is currently underway.”

“There were no casualties or injuries in the incident.”

Turkey’s Chief of General Staff Intelligence Agency, Ismail Hakki Pekin, told local media: “The broken part is not one that impacts the plane’s operation that much… It could be attributed to metal fatigue.

“Despite modernisation efforts, these are ageing aircraft that have been in service for several years.”

The F4 Phantom II first entered service in the USA in 1961 and is one of the most successful warplanes ever made.

America withdrew them from combat duties in 1996.
