Student Deniz Demirbayrakli had visited a friend’s house in the Kurucecme neighbourhood in the city of Izmir in Turkey on the evening of 6th August.

The young woman’s friends said the first time they knew there was a problem was when she suddenly started screaming in agony almost as soon as she applied the hair dye.

An allergic reaction to hair dye is typically due to anaphylaxis, which is a severe and potentially fatal allergic reaction that can affect the entire body.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and throat, rapid heartbeat, and a drop in blood pressure. If left untreated, anaphylaxis can lead to shock, cardiac arrest, and death.

Her unnamed friend, who heard her cries, notified the medical teams, who transported her to Buca Seyfi Demirsoy Education and Research Hospital via ambulance.

Despite the doctors’ best efforts at the hospital, Deniz could not be saved.

Following an examination, the young woman’s body was transferred to the Izmir Forensic Medicine Morgue.

Preliminary findings suggest that Deniz had a severe allergic reaction to the hair dye; however, the cause of death will be determined based on the results of the autopsy.

After the autopsy, the young woman’s body was handed over to her family. Her funeral took place in Dalaman, Mugla, on 8th August.

Before using hair dye, it is recommended to perform a patch test to check for any allergic reactions. This involves applying a small amount of the hair dye to a small area of skin and waiting for 24-48 hours before using.

A comprehensive investigation into the incident is ongoing.
