A major scandal has erupted at the Belgian embassy in Turkey after it was discovered that secret cameras were hidden inside – to film women on the toilet.
Investigators believe that a Turkish security guard working at the embassy in Ankara had decided to install the cameras to film women for his personal use.
He has been arrested and faces up to 30 years in jail for violation of privacy.
Details of the case came to light after the Belgian ambassador to Ankara, Paul Huynen, asked to be included in the legal case against the security guard.
Turkish officials rejected the request.
A court said the ambassador’s request to attend the proceedings would not be permitted on the grounds that he had not been harmed by the crime.
The cameras were apparently discovered by horrified officials, who believed that they might have been set up by a spy in order to record sensitive information.
When they were sent to Belgium to be investigated, it was discovered that they actually showed images of women taken under desks and in the bathroom.
After the information was passed to Turkish officials, the Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office started an investigation.
It resulted in the arrest of security guard Ahmet Ercan Cihan, who is now to be prosecuted.
He is currently in custody while the investigation continues.
